Getting in touch

The fastest route is Send feedback, in the app’s Settings. It opens a short form inside the app and arrives already labelled with the app version and your iOS version, so there is no need to describe your setup. It reaches a support queue that a person reads and answers, not an autoresponder. Add your email address in the form if you would like a reply.

Something wrong with the science

These reports are genuinely welcome and are treated differently from bug reports. Every factor names the study behind it on its own screen. If you think a hazard ratio is wrong, out of date, or applied in a way the original paper would not support, say which factor and, if you have one, which paper. How the number is calculated explains how factors are combined and where the known weaknesses are.

When something looks wrong

The number seems far too high or too low

Check the completeness figure on the dashboard first. A profile with three answers is mostly showing you your country’s average, not you.

Then check the breakdown. Every factor lists what it read from your answers, so a weight in the wrong units or a blood pressure typed as 1200 shows up there immediately.

My estimate went down when I added a good habit

This is usually population re-centring doing its job. Every factor is measured against what is normal, not against perfection, and your country’s life table already contains that country’s smoking and its obesity. Reporting an activity level that is below average will lower your estimate even though it is above zero. The factor screen shows both your value and where the average sits.

The parts do not add up to the whole

They are not supposed to, quite. Risk factors overlap, so the model shrinks the combined effect rather than multiplying everything together, which would badly overstate it. Each factor’s contribution is computed by removing that one factor, so the individual figures sum to slightly more than the total.

Apple Health did not import anything

Apple deliberately does not tell an app whether you denied read permission or simply have no data recorded, so Expectancy cannot tell those apart. If nothing came back, open the Settings app, then Privacy and Security, then Health, and confirm Expectancy is allowed to read what you expect. If you have never recorded blood pressure anywhere, there is nothing to import, and you can type it in instead.

My answers are not on my other device

Nothing syncs between devices, because nothing leaves any of them. Each iPhone or iPad keeps its own answers. Settings has an Export button if you want a copy of what one device knows.

Purchases and the free trial

• Restore a purchase: Settings in the app, then Restore a previous purchase. It works on any iPhone or iPad signed in to the same Apple Account.
• Cancel the subscription or the trial: in the Settings app, tap your name, then Subscriptions, then Expectancy. Cancel at least 24 hours before the seven-day trial ends and you are charged nothing. Cancelling does not remove the app or your data, and your estimate stays free.
• Switch to the one-off unlock: buy it in the app, then cancel the subscription in Subscriptions so it stops renewing.
• Refunds: purchases are processed by Apple, so refunds are requested from Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.

There is no account, so there is no password to reset and no form to fill in to leave.

Your data

Everything you enter stays on your device. Settings has Export, which writes it all to a JSON file you keep, and Erase everything, which deletes it. The privacy policy has the full detail, and the questions page covers what the app estimates and how.
